Whether you have never done free motion quilting or would just like to improve or move forward with this technique, this class is for you.
This class is possible to attend up to 4 times. I have created 4 different lesson – the basic introduction and understanding how the free motion quilting actually works on your first lesson. On the second lesson, we will explore following a drawn design and in the third lesson, you will choose designs which you are attracted to and learn how to achieve them. The last lesson is a bit of a graduation exam – feather design in a circle, using a template for the design and learning machine trapunto – two layers of wadding for a puffier look.
Lesson 1 – We’ll help you to set your machine for free motion quilting, explain to you what this type of quilting is all about; you’ll receive a small fabric “sandwich” and start “doodling” on the machine.
Requirements: We strongly recommend that you bring your own machine – you’re about to learn something new, and it’s much easier to do so with a sewing machine you are used to and will be quilting with in the future. (If you can’t bring your own, due to weight or travelling we can provide you with a machine at an extra cost of £5 per day.) Don’t forget to bring all your sewing machine equipment (darning or free embroidery feet, extension plate etc.) manual, pedal!! and dark threads.
Lesson 2 – You’ll receive fabric “sandwich” with a pre-drawn pattern, you’ll follow the pattern and fill the space around the pattern in various ways.
Requirements: sewing machine, pedal, dark threads.
Lesson 3 – From many samples you’ll choose a few quilting patterns and fill whole fat quarter with them.
Requirements: sewing machine, pedal, dark threads, fabric sandwich size of fat quarter (we recommend lighter fabric and darker thread).
Lesson 4 – As your final piece, you’ll be creating a cushion and learning a technique called Machine Trapunto – a double layer of wadding for a puffier look. You’ll transfer the design onto your fabric with a provided stencil.
Requirements: sewing machine, pedal, a fat quarter of lighter plain-ish fabric, wadding the size of the cushion you want to make, plus 12” square of wadding, threads matching/contrasting your fabric.
Cancellation with 2 weeks notice – we will refund your payment or offer you a place on a future workshop.
Cancellations within 13 – 8 days of the workshop – we will refund 50% of the payment.
Last-minute cancellations, ie. 7 days or less before a workshop – we’re afraid we cannot refund any payments as from experience we’ve found it impossible to fill places at such short notice.
Full refund for cancellation under 14 days possible if we replace you. Thank you for understanding with these formalities.
A requirement list can be found in the previous tab. The cost of supplies and fabrics are not included in the cost of the workshop unless stated. If you purchase your supplies for the workshop at OliVen you will receive 5% discount.
A sewing machine or overlocker can be hired in the shop for £5 a day – subject to availability.
