Description
Whether you have never done free motion quilting or would just like to improve or move forward with this technique, this class is for you.
This class is possible to attend up to 4 times. I have created 4 different lesson – the basic introduction and understanding how the free motion quilting actually works on your first lesson. On the second lesson, we will explore following a drawn design and in the third lesson, you will choose designs which you are attracted to and learn how to achieve them. The last lesson is a bit of a graduation exam – feather design in a circle, using a template for the design and learning machine trapunto – two layers of wadding for a puffier look.
Requirements
Lesson 1 – We’ll help you to set your machine for free motion quilting, explain to you what this type of quilting is all about; you’ll work on a small fabric “sandwich” and start “doodling” on the machine.
Requirements: Two quilting sandwiches – about 16″ x 12″ or Fat quarter size. Use two layers of light coloured fabric with no pattern – at least for one side of the sandwich – and wadding in between. Old sheets are just fine, you don’t need the pretty quilting fabrics.
We strongly recommend that you bring your own machine – you’re about to learn something new, and it’s much easier to do so with a sewing machine you are used to and will be quilting with in the future. (If you can’t bring your own, due to weight or travelling we can provide you with a machine at an extra cost of £5 per day.) Don’t forget to bring all your sewing machine equipment (darning or free embroidery feet, extension plate etc.) manual, pedal!! and dark threads.
Lesson 2 – You’ll receive fabric with pre-drawn pattern, you’ll follow the pattern and fill the space around it in various ways.
Requirements: sewing machine, pedal, dark threads, 20″ x 20″ square of wadding and backing fabric (front of the sandwich will be provided)
Lesson 3 – From many samples you’ll choose a few quilting patterns and fill whole fat quarter with them.
Requirements: sewing machine, pedal, dark threads, fabric sandwich size of fat quarter (we recommend lighter fabric and darker thread).
Lesson 4 – As your final piece, you’ll be creating a cushion and learning a technique called Machine Trapunto – a double layer of wadding for a puffier look. You’ll transfer the design onto your fabric with a provided stencil.
Requirements: sewing machine, pedal, a fat quarter of lighter plain-ish fabric, wadding the size of the cushion you want to make, plus 12” square of wadding, threads matching/contrasting your fabric.
